Food Rescue Philippines is a non-profit organization founded by Mac Florendo in 2015. Mac is an environmentalist who is passionate about reducing food waste and addressing hunger in the Philippines.
The organization collects unsold but still edible food from various food businesses and establishments and redistributes it to churches, shelters, and low-income families in need through bike deliveries and volunteer transportation.
Mac drew inspiration from Boulder Food Rescue during the Young Southeast Asian Leaders Initiative in 2015. He was particularly impressed by the use of bicycles to pick up and deliver food, which helps reduce the carbon footprint while helping people in need. This inspired him to replicate the idea in the Philippines, leading to the founding of Food Rescue Philippines.
Since its inception, Food Rescue Philippines has received recognition and support for its efforts. It was awarded a grant by the U.S. Mission to ASEAN and named one of the Ten Accomplished Youth Organizations at the 14th TAYO Awards in 2017. It also received the "Better World" Award from San Miguel Corporation.
Mac Florendo is a Youth Champion for The 2030 Project: SDG2 Zero Hunger, highlighting his commitment to addressing the issue of hunger in the Philippines. Food Rescue Philippines has made a significant impact in reducing food waste and providing nutritious meals to communities in need across the country.
