Mac Florendo Honored as 2023 Sustainability Leader for Non-Profit Sustainable Development

In a remarkable recognition of dedication and impactful contributions, Mac Florendo, the Founder of Food Rescue Philippines and Food Rescue Supervisor of Scholars of Sustenance (SOS) Philippines, has been honored with the 2023 Sustainability Leadership Award in the category of Non-Profit Sustainable Development Leadership. The prestigious event was organized by Sustainable PH in collaboration with Union Bank and JCI Quezon City Capitol, underscoring Mac's outstanding efforts in promoting sustainability and addressing critical issues like food waste and hunger.

For Mac Florendo, the award is not merely a testament to personal success, but an invaluable opportunity to amplify the message that each individual can play a role in creating a more sustainable planet. His journey towards environmental advocacy and sustainable development began during his time with the Cuernos de Negros Mountaineers Club at Silliman University. Mac's commitment to environmental causes took a pivotal turn when he was awarded a scholarship to study Environmental Issues at the East-West Center Hawaii through the Young Southeast Asian Leaders Initiative. It was during this period that he encountered Boulder Food Rescue in Colorado, inspiring him to bring the concept of food rescue to the Philippines. In 2015, Mac founded Food Rescue Philippines, initially known as Food Rescue ASEAN, with the vision of addressing both food waste and hunger in the country.

In 2023, Mac took on the role of Food Rescue Supervisor at Scholars of Sustenance (SOS) Philippines, expanding his impact and reinforcing his commitment to reducing food waste and hunger globally. The SOS organization is renowned for its efforts in rescuing surplus food and distributing it to those in need, aligning perfectly with Mac's mission.
