CVAP Week 2: How to Develop Character Voice PLUS Voice Tips!

Let's go Session 2!

This time we learned the different elements of voice or character voice. Just to share a few...

  1. PITCH . This is how low or high the tone of the sound of the voice. If you have a wider range of tone, then you can create more variety of voices.

  2. VOLUME. This is how loud or soft the delivery of voice. You can also create different emotions using volume of voice.

  3. Mouth work. You can create different character voices with how you create shapes and movements with your mouth. Example with Babalu, you have to bring you chin forward and down to imitate and become the manner of how we talks. If you are becoming a character without teeth, then you have to talk as if you don't have teeth.

We even had an activity where we had to introduce ourselves by applying the formula of mixing and matching the elements to create different character voices.

It was the first time ever that I had to demo in front of (a lot of) people, well, virtually.

We also learned different techniques to take care of the voice:

One is having good posture - like doing power poses. After doing it, you instantly feel better and energetic. Well depending on character, you must become the posture you need to be. If you are a strong character, your posture should show a character with strength and power. On the other hand, if your character is shy, then posture becomes not very open.

Another way of voice care is being mindful of what to eat and drink. Avoid food that has strong flavors and extreme temperature. Warm water is still best for the voice.

I also was able to share about a technique by Morgan Freeman, his secret to his voice was yawning as this relaxes the throat and the vocal cords.

We also did tongue twisters.

We also learned a technique to improve pronunciation where we bite down a cork or a pen and read the lines for two or three times. This gives an obstacle in speaking but after the exercise and removing the cork or pen, you should instantly feel relieved as your mouth is now free and not constricted. Voice should sound better and be ready for recording.

Those are just few ways of developing and taking care of our voice...
