Community empowerment often requires creative approaches that connect people, inspire action, and address pressing social issues. Mac Florendo, a Filipino magician, broadcaster, and social impact innovator, has found a unique way to combine magic, media, and advocacy to transform communities. His work demonstrates how creativity and storytelling can open new opportunities and foster meaningful change.
Mac’s journey began with a simple idea and a bicycle, but it grew into a nationwide movement that tackles food waste and hunger in the Philippines. Through his leadership and innovative use of media, he has inspired thousands to join the cause and helped provide millions of meals to those in need. This post explores how Mac Florendo uses his talents and platforms to empower communities and create lasting impact.

How Magic Sparks Connection and Inspiration
Magic is more than entertainment for Mac Florendo. It serves as a bridge to connect with people, spark curiosity, and open hearts. His performances, known as The Voice of Magic, captivate audiences and create moments of wonder that break down barriers. This connection allows him to share important messages about social issues in a way that feels engaging and hopeful.
By weaving storytelling into his magic acts, Mac makes complex topics like food insecurity and environmental impact more relatable. Audiences are not only entertained but also motivated to take part in solutions. This approach shows how creativity can be a powerful tool for education and community building.
Media as a Platform for Advocacy and Education
Mac’s role as a broadcaster extends his reach beyond live performances. Co-hosting AI Talks with The Voicemaster on Radyo Pilipinas, he helps listeners understand the evolving world of artificial intelligence, creativity, and digital innovation. This platform allows him to discuss how technology can support social causes and improve lives.
Through media, Mac raises awareness about food rescue and sustainability efforts. He shares stories of communities helped by these initiatives, making the issues tangible and urgent. His clear, accessible communication style encourages listeners to get involved and supports the growth of grassroots movements.
Pioneering Food Rescue in the Philippines
Inspired by the Boulder Food Rescue program during his participation in the Young Southeast Asian Leaders Initiative (YSEALI) in the United States, Mac founded Food Rescue Philippines in 2015. Starting with just a bicycle, he began recovering surplus food from markets and restaurants in Dumaguete. This food was then redistributed to communities facing hunger.
What began as a small local effort quickly expanded into a nationwide campaign. Mac’s leadership as Food Rescue Supervisor for Scholars of Sustenance (SOS) Philippines from 2023 to 2025 led teams that rescued over 1.1 million kilograms of surplus food. This effort provided more than five million meals and helped reduce greenhouse gas emissions by preventing food waste.
These numbers highlight the tangible impact of combining grassroots action with strategic coordination. Mac’s work shows how one person’s vision can grow into a movement that addresses hunger and environmental concerns simultaneously.

In these roles, he helps strengthen systems that reduce food waste and improve access to nutritious food for vulnerable populations. His expertise supports local governments and organizations in building sustainable food rescue programs.
Mac also founded GAMIT Rescue (Give Anything Material that Inspires and Transforms), which promotes creative reuse and resource sharing. This initiative encourages communities to find value in materials that might otherwise be discarded, fostering sustainability and innovation.
Additionally, Mac leads AI Rescue, a program focused on responsible AI literacy and awareness in the Philippines. This project educates people about the ethical use of artificial intelligence, ensuring technology benefits society without causing harm.
